Guidelines for Writing Persuasive Essays
Introduction
1. Use an attention “grabber”- something to draw the reader attention to your writing. These “grabbers” can be something like a short anecdote, question, or even a startling fact.
2. In one sentence, tell what is being proposed. (Some prompts will not present a proposal. If This is not the case, go to #3)
3. Provide some background information about the issue. (2-3 sentences).
4. Tell your position on this issue. (This will be your thesis statement and the last sentence in
Your introduction. ) Try to include your reasons in this statement using parallel construction. 
This will provide “signposts” for your peers as they read through your essay.)
First Body Paragraph
1. Open with a transitional phrase followed by Reason #1.
2. Write one sentence explaining your Reason.
3. Write 3-5 sentences supporting this Reason.
Try to think of specific examples, authorities or facts.
Suggestion: Try to use at least two of the three means of elaboration stated above in each body paragraph.
Second Body Paragraph
1. Open with a transitional phrase followed by Reason #2.
2. Write one sentence explaining your Reason.
3. Write 3-5 sentences supporting this Reason.

1. Summarize main points (Write a one sentence summary of each of your three reasons.)

3. Urge reader to do something and/or
4. Draw conclusions/make predictions
