(qualitative research) critiquing qualitative research

The student will be expected to:
Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the research process, through the critical appraisal and analysis of a research article, identifying how the evidence may inform best practice.
The assignment should demonstrate the achievement of all learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
NB: All requests for an extension must be made to your year lead only.
SUGGESTED STEP BY STEP APPROACH TO COMPLETING THE ASSIGNMENT:
• Remember to use a questioning approach to this assignment.
• Question each area in detail and answer the questions raised.
This is your analysis which you will then support with evidence (References) from the research texts. Eg. If you suggest it is good to have a sample of 30 people in a quantitative research study, who supports that? Do other authors agree or disagree with this? A supporting reference would be good here.
Your introduction and Section 1 of Coughlan et al (2007) Critique tool. (10%)
Your introduction should be brief: Why have you chosen the particular article? What is the link to your practice? Briefly introduce the critique tool, Why is the tool useful? Why do we need to critique research studies?
1. Writing style of the article:
Is it appropriate? Is the report well written? Is it concise? Is it grammatically accurate? Is the article filled with jargon? Is it well organised and logically presented? Is the report from a peer reviewed publication? Is the research current?
2. Author/s:
Is the author/s background indicative of having knowledge and/or experience in the field being studied or in research?
3. Title:
Is the title clear? Does the title indicate what the article is about? Is the title unambiguous? Is the title misleading?
4. Abstract:
Does the abstract offer a clear overview of the study? Is the problem highlighted? Is the methodology made clear? Are the main findings included? Are recommendations provided?
Section 2 of the Coughlan et al (2007) Critique tool. (80%)
5. Purpose or research problem or statement of interest:
Is the research question or phenomenon to be studied clearly identified? Is the research relevant to Nursing or Health care?
6. Logical consistency:
Is the research process followed? Is the layout of the article consistent with the research process?
7. Literature review:
Has a literature review been undertaken? Does it meet the philosophical underpinnings of the study (Where are the researchers coming from)? Does the review of the literature fulfil its objectives? Does it offer a balanced critical analysis of the literature (Does it present literature that both supports and opposes the researchers’ position)? Is the majority of the literature of recent origin? Is the literature mainly from primary sources? Has any significant literature been omitted?
Is the literature review written critically (does it indicate strengths and weaknesses of the previous work)?
8. Theoretical framework:
Has a conceptual or theoretical framework been identified? Is the framework adequately described? Is the framework appropriate (does it fit the problem)? Does it include all the relevant variables?
Note: Sometimes Qualitative, Quantitative research and descriptive research may not always include a theoretical framework.
9. Aims, Objectives, Hypotheses:
Have aims, objectives, research question or hypotheses been identified? Are they clearly stated? Are they reflective of the information in the literature review?
10. Methodology:
Is the research design clearly identified? What design has been used? Has the data gathering instrument been described? Is the instrument appropriate (will the data gathered answer the question)? How was the instrument developed? Were reliability and validity testing undertaken and the results discussed? Was a pilot study carried out (would this be a good idea)?
11. Sample:
Is the sampling method and size of the sample identified? Is the sampling method appropriate? Has the target population clearly been identified? How were the sample selected? Was it a probability or non probability sample? Is the sample an adequate size? Are inclusion and exclusion criteria clearly stated?
12. Ethical considerations:
Was ethics committee approval granted for the study? Were the participants fully informed about the nature of the research study? Was the autonomy and confidentiality of the participants guaranteed? Were the participants and researchers protected from harm? Was there any evidence of coercion? Could the participants feel pressured to take part? Could the participants responses be influenced in any way?
13. Data Collection and Analysis:
Are the data collection strategies described? Are the strategies used to analyse the data described? Did the researcher follow the steps of the data analysismethod identified? Was data saturation achieved? What type of data and statistical analysis was undertaken? Is the process used to analyse data clear? How many of the sample selected actually took part? What is the significance of the findings? Could the researcher/s have affected the data collected in any way? Do the results provide an answer to the research question? If tables, graphs or other graphical data are provided are they clear and understandable?
14. Discussion:
Are the findings presented appropriately? Has the report been placed in the context of what is already known of the phenomena (Linked to the literature)? Has the original purpose of the study been adequately addressed? If a hypothesis was identified was it supported? Are the strengths and limitations of the study identified? How do strengths and weaknesses affect the study? Are the findings generalisable to the wider population (not usually applicable to qualitative research studies)? Was a recommendation for further research made? Does the research have implications for practice?
15. References:
Were all the books, journals and other media alluded to in the study accurately referenced? Are the cited evidence sources up to date? Is there a combination of current and classic sources?
